Asimina Arvanitaki, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Aristarchus Chair, was awarded the Vogt Medal by the Canadian Association of Physicists and TRIUMF particle accelerator centre for her “innovative contributions to a number of areas of fundamental physics and in particular for identifying experiments that could test the underlying physics.”
Alexander Braverman, research associate faculty member, and Liujun Zou, postdoctoral researcher, were each recipients of Frontiers of Science Awards from the International Congress of Basic Science for recent papers.
Kevin Costello, Krembil William Rowan Hamilton Chair, won the John L. Synge Award from the Royal Society of Canada for work that “brings modern mathematical techniques to bear” in a “widely used theoretical paradigm in physics.”
Raymond Laflamme, research associate faculty member, was named co-chair of the National Quantum Strategy, launched by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada in January 2023.
Katherine (Katie) Mack, Hawking Chair in Cosmology and Science Communication, was awarded the 2024 Richtmyer Memorial Lecture Award for “outstanding contributions to physics and for effectively communicating those contributions to physics educators.”
Alex May, new research faculty member, was awarded the 2022 P.R. Wallace Thesis Prize by the Canadian Association of Physicists Division of Theoretical Physics and the Winnipeg Institute for Theoretical Physics for his PhD thesis, “Quantum tasks in holography.”
Robert Myers, Perimeter Director and BMO Financial Group Isaac Newton Chair, was awarded the Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Physics by the Canadian Association of Physicists for “groundbreaking contributions to a range of areas in foundational physics, largely centered on the quest to unify quantum theory and Einstein’s theory of general relativity.”
Will Percival, research associate faculty member, was co-awarded the 2023 Giuseppe and Vanna Cocconi Prize in cosmology by the European Physical Society as part of the SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey), BOSS (Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey), and eBOSS (Extended BOSS) collaborations.
Kendrick Smith, Daniel Family James Peebles Chair, along with a team of CHIME (Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment) researchers, was co-awarded the Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada for “one of the biggest success stories in Canadian astrophysics.”
Perimeter Institute was awarded the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education Prix d’Excellence silver medal for Best Use of Social Media for the March Madness–style campaign ranking physics equations.
Six Perimeter researchers were listed on Research.com’s annual ranking of the best researchers in physics: Research Faculty member and Krembil Galileo Galilei Chair Davide Gaiotto, Perimeter Director and BMO Financial Group Isaac Newton Chair Robert Myers, and Research Associate Faculty members Cliff Burgess, Raymond Laflamme, Ue-Li Pen, and Will Percival.
In 2022/23, Perimeter scientists were awarded $5.5 million in new research grants from agencies including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, the Simons Foundation, the Blaumann Foundation, and the Templeton Foundation.
